Carbon footprint of outdoor spaces
This project is an interactive application designed to evaluate the carbon footprint of different types of pavement structures (asphalt, concrete, paving stones, gravel, etc.).
This application is part of a research publication and project, which you can find here:
https://www.buildinglowcarbon.com/projects/sobrespu
The app relies on a database of construction materials (density, emission factors) and computes footprints dynamically based on the chosen surface area.
⚠️ Note: When deployed, the application may take 2–3 minutes to “wake up” after a period of inactivity. This is normal behavior due to server resource management. Once the app is active, interactions are fast and smooth.
The user can build, compare, and customize multiple pavement compositions layer by layer, and instantly obtain their total and detailed carbon impact.
Predefined pavement types: Select from ready-made templates based on Swiss mobility norm and pratical usage (e.g., asphalt pavement, stone paver, concrete slab), which automatically load their default layers.
Layer-by-layer editing:
Choose material
Define thickness
Configure material-specific parameters
Add, delete, or duplicate layers
Manage multiple pavements:
Add several pavement compositions in the same session
Rename each pavement
Duplicate pavements to test variants
Delete pavements
To guarantee proper functioning, two pavements cannot share the same name. Each pavement instance must have a unique identifier chosen by the user.
Please note that the tool is not kept up to date; they are the results of research projects with limited funding durations. Furthermore, we take no responsibility for their use or for any errors they may cause.
